(EL SEGUNDO, Calif – May 21, 2020) –  Avanti Hospitals announced today that its Community Hospital of Huntington Park (CHHP) received 1,600 face shields from SoCal Honda Dealers and the Honda Corporation to help arm staff in their mission of care and eradication of COVID-19.

SoCal Honda Dealers, through their Helpful Honda Random Acts of Kindness program, are focusing efforts on initiatives that will help to meet the needs of communities during this unusual and difficult time. Hospital leadership, members of the Huntington Park Chamber of Commerce, a COVID-19 survivor, and Emergency Department physicians and nurses were all in attendance to receive the masks and thank the Helpful Honda Guys.  In addition to the mask donation, they surprised the COVID-19 survivor, Ms. Porfiria Arriaga, by paying her rent for the month as she continues to fully recover at home.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous and much needed donation,” said Gregory Monette, Assistant Administrator of CHHP.  “Our physicians, nurses and staff are working tirelessly to care for the community, and these face shields help to protect our workers and patients.  They are an essential tool in short supply, and we are thankful to the Helpful Honda Guys for their timely donation.”

CHHP primarily serves low-income Latino families in a medically underserved area, and has been impacted by the large percentage of COVID-19 patients utilizing its small number of beds. The hospital’s emergency department, already one of the busiest in the county in terms of visits per emergency department bed, is experiencing exceptionally large volumes of patients as the Latino community has been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

Since March 1, CHHP has treated over 400 potential COVID-19 patients. At any given time since mid-March, these patients have occupied over 50% of bed capacity. The hospital offers a wide range of services, including an Intensive Care Unit, and is recognized by the federal government as a “disproportionate share hospital” with a high percentage of uninsured patients.

“Our medical professionals are on the frontlines of this pandemic, and they need all the personal protective equipment they can get as they treat COVID-19 patients. At this moment, every donation goes a long way in helping to protect those who are protecting us,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. “I thank SoCal Honda Dealers, the Honda Corporation, and the Helpful Honda Guys for donating 1,600 face shields to the heroes of this crisis: the health care workers at Community Hospital of Huntington Park.”

Community Hospital of Huntington Park has a mission of providing affordable, high-quality care to its underserved communities with consistency and compassion, and could not do so without donations such as this and the support of its community partners.
