(LOS ANGELES, CA – January 2, 2014) — With the celebration of the New Year underway, Avanti Hospitals welcomed newborns Dorion Murray, Jr. and Jayleen Osuna, the first babies born at two of its acute care facilities in 2014. Thousands of babies are born annually at Memorial Hospital of Gardena (MHG) and East Los Angeles Doctors Hospital (ELADH), and the cycle begins again each January with the celebration of the first births of the year.

Arriving a few weeks earlier than his January 20 due date, Dorion Nyguen Murray, Jr. was born at MHG at 12:52 p.m. on January 1 to parents Natasha Reed and Dorion Murray of Los Angeles. He was delivered by attending obstetrician George Kovacs, M.D. and is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son. Dorion weighs 6 pounds, 5 ounces and measures 18 inches in length.

Jayleen Ariana Osuna was born at ELADH at 3:42 p.m. on January 1 to parents Arcelia and Jorge Osuna. She weighs 7 pounds, 0.5 ounces, measures 18.5 inches in length, and was delivered by attending obstetrician Alejandro Aguilar, M.D. Jayleen is the couple’s fourth child; she joins three older sisters, ages 5, 9, and 13. The family resides in Paramount, CA.

As the hospitals’ first babies of the year, Dorion and Jayleen’s families were given large gift baskets from Avanti that included a variety of baby items, such as an infant car seat, baby blankets and clothes, supplies, crib accessories, and stuffed animals.

“We are honored to celebrate the arrival of the 2014 New Year’s Babies, and wish Dorion and Jayleen lives filled with good health and happiness,” said Edward Mirzabegian, Corporate Chief Executive Officer of Avanti Hospitals. “Providing excellent maternity care is one of our top priorities and we are delighted to share in this special occasion with these families.”

Hundreds of thousands of the area’s residents have been brought into the world at MHG and ELADH since their doors opened in 1951 and 1958, respectively; in fact, nearly 2,000 newborns were delivered at the hospitals in past twelve months alone. The mother/baby units at MHG and ELADH feature semi- private post-partum rooms that are furnished with beds and bassinets so that the mother and baby can stay in the same room until they go home, helping to strengthen their bond and allow the mother to learn her baby’s early feeding cues. Prenatal education classes and baby showers are also offered for expecting parents, as well as breastfeeding education and support.
